- A real-time lead is delivered moments after a consumer asks for information. It carries the highest intent and the highest price.
- An aged lead is the same kind of inquiry, delivered days, weeks, or months later at a much lower cost.
- A data lead is a contact selected because it fits an audience profile, not because the person made a recent inquiry.
- The right choice depends on how fast your team follows up, your budget per sale, and the volume you can handle.
Lead buyers use the words real-time, aged, and data as if everyone agrees on what they mean. They describe three different products with different prices and different ways of working them. Choosing the wrong one for your team is one of the most common reasons a lead program disappoints.
Real-time leads
A real-time lead is generated when a consumer requests information, for example by filling out a quote form, and is delivered to the buyer immediately afterward. The person is thinking about the purchase at that moment.
- Strength: the highest intent. Contact rates are best in the first minutes after the inquiry.
- Cost: the most expensive of the three, because freshness is what you are paying for.
- Demands: a team and a system that respond right away. A real-time lead called the next day has lost most of its advantage.
Aged leads
An aged lead started life the same way, as a consumer inquiry, but it is sold later: days, weeks, or months after the original request. Some of those consumers have already bought. Many have not, and their need has not gone away.
- Strength: a much lower cost per lead, which lets you buy volume.
- Cost: falls as the lead gets older.
- Demands: persistence. Aged leads reward teams that work a list methodically across phone, email, and text over several attempts.

Data leads
A data lead is a contact record chosen because the person fits a defined audience: an age range, a geography, an interest, a purchasing behavior. The person has not necessarily asked about your product. You are reaching out to a well-chosen audience instead of responding to a request.
- Strength: scale and precision. You can build very large, tightly targeted lists.
- Cost: the lowest per record.
- Demands: strong targeting and messaging, since you are starting the conversation. Best suited to email, direct mail, and call-center campaigns built for volume.
How to choose
Three questions settle most of the decision:
- How fast can you follow up? If you cannot respond within minutes, you will not get what you pay for from real-time leads.
- What can you spend to win one customer? High-value sales can absorb real-time prices. Lower-margin offers usually need the economics of aged or data leads.
- How much volume can your team work? A small team may do best with fewer, fresher leads. A call center needs volume to stay busy.
Most programs use a mix
These are not either-or choices. A common setup is real-time leads for the team's best closers, a steady supply of lower-cost records to keep everyone else productive, and targeted data for email and mail campaigns that run in the background. Whatever you buy, ask the seller how the leads were generated and how old they are, and make sure your outreach follows the consent rules that apply to your channel and your industry.
